Kaunas Old Town is the city’s historic centre, with Town Hall Square, House of Perkūnas and Kaunas Castle among its main landmarks. A walking route can link these places with Vilniaus Street and the riverside around the castle.
- Start: Kaunas Old Town, with Kaunas Town Hall at Rotušės a. 15.
- Route highlight: Vilniaus Street is the Old Town’s central pedestrian street.
- Castle setting: Kaunas Castle stands where the Nemunas and Neris rivers meet, beside Confluence Park.
- Town Hall hours: Opening times vary by day, with Monday closures and some holiday exceptions.

Start in Kaunas Old Town
Begin in Kaunas Old Town and use Vilniaus Street as the route’s central spine. It was a medieval road to Vilnius and became exclusively pedestrian after reconstruction.
From there, continue toward Town Hall Square, then make your way to House of Perkūnas before walking on to Kaunas Castle. The sequence keeps the route focused on the Old Town’s central landmarks and finishes beside the rivers.
House of Perkūnas is about a two-minute walk from Daugirdas Old, a four-star hotel. Its position makes it easy to include in a walk through the historic centre.

Kaunas Town Hall Square
Kaunas Town Hall stands in the heart of the Old Town at Rotušės a. 15, on Town Hall Square. The square makes a natural first stop before continuing along the Old Town streets.
The Town Hall is open Tuesday and Wednesday from 10:00 to 17:00, Thursday from 12:00 to 20:00, Friday and Saturday from 12:00 to 18:00, and Sunday from 12:00 to 17:00.
It is closed on Mondays and public holidays, with exceptions for 16 February, 11 March and 6 July. On the day before a public holiday, it closes an hour earlier than usual. On the last Tuesday of each month, visitors cannot enter from 10:00 to 12:00 during maintenance.
Admission is €10 at the regular rate and €5 for students and people who have reached the state social insurance age. Preschool children, schoolchildren, people with disabilities and other listed groups enter free. Tickets are sold at the museum ticket office, by cash or card, until 30 minutes before closing. Check the official site before you go.
The Town Hall visit fits neatly at the start of a walking route, before you continue to House of Perkūnas and the nearby historic streets. For a closer look at the visit itself, the House of Perkūnas visitor guide covers that landmark.

House of Perkūnas and nearby streets
House of Perkūnas is a landmark to include between Town Hall Square and Kaunas Castle. Its historic façade gives the walk a distinct stop before the route continues toward the riverside.
From the house, continue through the Old Town toward Vilniaus Street, the area’s central pedestrian street and former medieval route to Vilnius. Following the street keeps you on foot through the historic centre rather than taking a detour into the adjacent New Town.

Walk to Kaunas Castle
Kaunas Castle sits at the confluence of the Nemunas and Neris rivers, with Confluence Park around it. From the castle, the route reaches the water’s edge and provides a natural end point for a walk through the Old Town.
The castle museum is at Pilies g. 17, Kaunas. The entrance is on the ground floor of the castle tower. Its exhibitions cover the castle’s history, its changing form and function, and significant historical figures from the 14th century to the present, arranged across five areas of the tower.
The museum and exhibitions have not been adapted for visitors with disabilities. For the museum’s ticket and opening details, the Kaunas Castle visitor guide is a useful next read.
Where to extend the route
Continue from Kaunas Castle into Confluence Park, which surrounds the castle where the Nemunas and Neris rivers meet. The riverside setting extends the walk beyond the Old Town’s streets without changing its focus on the historic centre.

Practical walking notes
Allow the route to unfold from Town Hall Square through Vilniaus Street and House of Perkūnas, then finish at Kaunas Castle and Confluence Park. The landmarks and pedestrian street make this a walk centred on the Old Town rather than a trip between distant parts of the city.
Kaunas Town Hall has different hours across the week and closes on Mondays and public holidays, subject to the exceptions above. If you plan to go inside, check its official site before setting out.
