Why visit Pažaislis Monastery?

Why visit Pažaislis Monastery?

Pažaislis Monastery offers a look at a living religious community as well as one of the region’s notable Baroque ensembles. The Lithuanian Congregation of the Sisters of St. Casimir lives at the monastery, cares for it and maintains it; the complex is also a state-protected cultural monument.

Construction began in 1664 for the Camaldolese monks, after Grand Duchy of Lithuania chancellor Kristupas Žygimantas Pacas gave them the Pažaislis manor. Italian masters designed and decorated the Baroque church and monastery ensemble. The Pažaislis Sacred Museum occupies the complex’s southern annex, built in the early 18th century.

For a wider look at the city before or after the excursion, the Kaunas Old Town walking guide focuses on the historic centre.

What can you see around the monastery grounds?

The Baroque church and monastery form the centrepiece of the Pažaislis ensemble, while the museum sits in its southern annex. Beside the monastery, a roughly 2 km nature trail follows the shore and slopes of Kaunas Lagoon, then continues through woodland toward Kaunas Yacht Club.

Monte Pacis, a hospitality complex in the historic guesthouse, stands next to the monastery ensemble. You can combine the architectural visit with time on the lakeside trail, keeping in mind that access to the monastery’s indoor visitor spaces follows separate hours.

How do visiting hours, admission and tours work?

How do visiting hours, admission and tours work?

Regular complex visits run Tuesday to Friday from 10:00 to 17:00, with last admission at 16:30; on Saturday, hours are 10:00 to 15:30, with last admission at 15:00.

On Sundays, the gates open from 10:00 to 14:00 for people attending the 11:00 Mass, but the visitor centre and museum are closed and tours do not take place. The visitor centre does not serve tourists on Mondays, the monastery’s day of silence.

Admission costs €10 for adults and €5 for pupils, students and seniors. A family ticket costs the adult admission price plus €1 for each child. Admission is free for several groups, including preschool children, visitors aged 80 or older, and eligible visitors with disabilities and a qualifying companion. Some free-admission categories require proof or a written request.

You can buy complex admission tickets at the on-site ticket office by cash or card. Payment by bank transfer is also accepted in advance or after a visit when you provide a guarantee letter or voucher.

The visitor centre does not have a resident local guide: tours are led by professional Kaunas city guides, who set their own rates. The centre provides guide contacts by phone or email.

Professional-equipment photography or filming anywhere on the ensemble grounds requires written permission. Celebratory and wedding photo shoots are prohibited, and permits are not issued for them. Hours can change, and the exhibition may close for maintenance, events or filming, so check the Pažaislis visitor centre’s official site before you go.

How do you get from Kaunas Old Town to Pažaislis?

How do you get from Kaunas Old Town to Pažaislis?

Pažaislis Monastery is in Kaunas at T. Masiulio g. 31. For festival concerts at the monastery, the festival organizer directs passengers to the final stop on the route named “Kauno marios.” Trolleybuses 5, 9 and 12 serve the route, and the stop is 0.6 km from the monastery. Additional trolleybus services are organized during concerts there.

If you are planning a full city visit around the outing, the one-day Kaunas itinerary is based in Old Town.

When does the Pažaislis Music Festival take place?

The Pažaislis Music Festival takes place over the summer and has been held since 1996. The monastery is its central setting, but events also take place in Kaunas and elsewhere in Lithuania.

The organizer describes a programme of roughly 40 concerts attended by more than 25,000 listeners; venues include Pažaislis Monastery, Kaunas State Philharmonic and Zapyškis Old St John the Baptist’s Church.

Festival tickets are sold online, at concert venues one hour before an event if it has not sold out, at the Kaunas State Philharmonic box office and at listed Vaga bookstore sales points; a service fee applies.

For concerts at Pažaislis, audience members enter through a gate on the left side of the complex beside the visitor centre. Entry begins no earlier than one hour before the concert. These concerts take place outdoors and continue in adverse weather, including rain, so the festival recommends comfortable, warm clothing and footwear.
